WhatsApp Business API vs SMS in Nigeria: what each really costs

WhatsApp Business API vs bulk SMS in Nigeria, with real prices: Meta's +234 rates in naira, local SMS rates, a worked monthly bill and when each wins.

By MywaUpdated 6 min read

Nigerian businesses have long used bulk SMS for promos, order alerts and OTPs. Now customers expect to chat on WhatsApp, and the WhatsApp Business API lets a business message them there at scale. But which is cheaper? The honest answer surprises people: for a plain promo blast, local bulk SMS is still much cheaper. For everything that involves a conversation, WhatsApp wins. This guide puts real prices side by side, as of October 2026.

The short answer

  • Promo blasts: local bulk SMS costs about ₦2 to ₦9 per message. A WhatsApp marketing message costs $0.0516, about ₦69. SMS is roughly 10 times cheaper.
  • Order updates and OTPs: WhatsApp costs $0.0067, about ₦8.92, close to an SMS, and the customer can reply, tap a button or see an image.
  • Conversations: messages customers send you are free on WhatsApp, and your first 1,000 replies per number each month are free too.
  • Sending from abroad: international SMS to Nigeria is expensive (Twilio lists $0.3868 per SMS segment), so for businesses outside Nigeria, WhatsApp is the cheaper channel for everything.

Price per message, side by side

Meta charges per delivered WhatsApp message by category. These are its rates for Nigerian (+234) numbers, effective 1 October 2026, with naira at the CBN official rate of about ₦1,331 per dollar on 12 October 2026:

MessageWhatsApp (Meta's rate)In nairaLocal bulk SMS
Promo or offer (marketing)$0.0516₦68.69about ₦1.80 to ₦9.10
Order, delivery or payment update (utility)$0.0067₦8.92about ₦1.80 to ₦9.10
One-time password (authentication)$0.0067₦8.92about ₦1.80 to ₦9.10
Your reply in a customer chat (service)First 1,000 a month free, then $0.0067₦8.92not a two-way chat

Local SMS prices are published list prices from Nigerian aggregators and fall with volume. For example, BulkSMSNigeria lists ₦6.49 per SMS before VAT, and eBulkSMS lists ₦5.00 down to ₦1.80 at very high volumes. Each SMS is one 160-character page; special characters such as ₦ make pages shorter, so long or symbol-heavy messages cost two or more pages.

Two things move the WhatsApp side: Meta doesn't bill in naira (its rate card comes in US dollars and 15 other currencies), so your naira cost follows the exchange rate; and utility and authentication rates drop at high monthly volume.

Where SMS still wins

  • Cheap promo blasts to everyone. If the message is "20% off this weekend" and you're sending to a large list, SMS costs a fraction of a WhatsApp marketing message.
  • Reach without data. SMS works on any phone with no internet connection.

Where WhatsApp wins

  • Conversations. Customers can ask a question, send a photo or share a location in the same chat, and your team answers from one inbox. Incoming messages are free, and the first 1,000 replies per number each month cost nothing.
  • Updates that do more. An order update can carry the product image, a "Track order" button or a "Pay now" link, and you can see when it was read. At ₦8.92, it costs about what a longer SMS does.
  • Ads that start chats. Every chat that starts from a click-to-WhatsApp ad on Facebook or Instagram is free for 72 hours, marketing messages included.
  • Trust. Customers see your business name and profile instead of an unknown sender ID, which matters in a market where SMS fraud is common.
  • Long messages. A WhatsApp message isn't split into 160-character pages.

A worked month for a Lagos online store

A store sends 5,000 promos, 4,000 order and delivery updates and 1,000 OTPs, and replies 3,000 times to customers:

PlanWhat it costsWhat you get
Everything on SMS₦64,900 (10,000 SMS at ₦6.49)No chat; customers reply by calling or texting a number
Everything on WhatsApp$319.89, about ₦425,834 (Meta $304.90 + Mywa $14.99)Chat, images, buttons and read receipts for everything
Mixed: chat, updates and OTPs on WhatsApp, promos by SMSabout ₦114,837 (WhatsApp $61.89 ≈ ₦82,387 + 5,000 SMS ₦32,450)Chat and rich updates; cheap promos

The difference between the plans is almost entirely the 5,000 promos: on WhatsApp they cost $258. That's why many Nigerian businesses run a mixed setup, or send fewer, better-targeted WhatsApp campaigns. You can also start conversations with click-to-WhatsApp ads, where the first 72 hours of messages are free. Plug in your own numbers in the Nigeria WhatsApp API pricing calculator.

The rules for marketing messages in Nigeria

This isn't legal advice, but every business should know these:

  • Consent for direct marketing. Under the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 and the NDPC's General Application and Implementation Directive (GAID) 2025, you need consent to use someone's number for direct marketing, and people can object at any time. In June 2026 the Federal High Court in Abuja ordered GTCO to stop sending marketing messages to a non-customer under the Act.
  • Meta's WhatsApp Business Messaging Policy requires opt-in before you message anyone on WhatsApp, and you must honour requests to stop, on or off WhatsApp.
  • Do Not Disturb for SMS. Nigerian subscribers can block promotional SMS by texting STOP to 2442 under the NCC's DND rules, so a part of any SMS list won't receive promos.

In practice: collect opt-in at checkout or in your ad's lead form, say what you'll send, and make "reply STOP" work on every channel.

  4. Answer chats as a team from one shared inbox, with automatic first replies to ad leads.
  5. Test WhatsApp campaigns on a small, engaged list before moving promos over, and compare sales per naira spent with your SMS campaigns.

Mywa is $14.99 a month (or $149 a year) plus local taxes, with every feature and 5 team members included. Meta bills message charges directly to your own WhatsApp Business Account at its official rates, with no markup from Mywa. See Mywa pricing.

The bottom line

In Nigeria, SMS is still the cheapest way to blast a promo, but WhatsApp is the better channel for conversations, order updates and OTPs, at about the same price as an SMS for updates and with replies largely free. Most businesses get the best of both by moving chat, updates and OTPs to WhatsApp and keeping big promo blasts on SMS until WhatsApp campaigns prove they sell more.
