WhatsApp has no button to export a group's members. If you run a customer group, a class group or a community and want those numbers in a spreadsheet, you either copy them one by one or use a tool. This guide shows the fastest free way, with the Mywa Chrome extension, plus the manual options and the rules to follow before you message anyone on the list.
The short answer
- WhatsApp can't export group members by itself. Group info shows the member list, but there's no download.
- The free Mywa Chrome extension does it in about a minute. Open the group on WhatsApp Web, click Scrape members, then Export CSV. The file opens in Excel or Google Sheets.
- You get names and phone numbers, and who the admins are. Members who hide their number for privacy come through with a name only.
- Collecting numbers isn't permission to message them. Only message people who agreed to hear from you, or your number can get reported and blocked.
What is a WhatsApp group member scraper?
A WhatsApp group member scraper (also called a group contacts extractor or exporter) is a tool that reads a group's member list and saves it as a file, usually a CSV with each member's name and phone number. People use one to:
- Back up a group they run, such as a customer, parents' or society group.
- Move members into a CRM or contact list, so the team can follow up properly.
- Check who's in a group: admins, duplicates, or numbers already in their customer list.
The Mywa Chrome extension, listed as MYWA - Chat & Group Tools on the Chrome Web Store, is a free group member scraper. It runs in Google Chrome on your computer, on top of WhatsApp Web.
How to export WhatsApp group members to Excel or CSV, step by step
You need Google Chrome on a computer, your phone with WhatsApp, and to be a member of the group.
- Add the Mywa extension to Chrome. Open the Chrome Web Store page and click Add to Chrome, then Add extension. You only do this once.
- Pin it to your toolbar. Click the puzzle icon at the top right of Chrome, then the pin next to MYWA - Chat & Group Tools. The Mywa icon now stays next to the address bar.
- Open the group on WhatsApp Web. Go to web.whatsapp.com, log in by scanning the QR code with your phone, and open the group chat you want. If WhatsApp Web was already open before you added the extension, refresh the page once.
- Click the Mywa icon, then Scrape members. The extension opens the group's member list and scrolls through it by itself. Keep the popup open until it finishes.
- Download the CSV file. When it's done you'll see the total members, how many have a phone number, and the admins. Click Export CSV to download the file, or Copy numbers to copy every number at once.
- Open or import the file. The CSV opens in Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers. To work the list in Mywa, upload it in Contacts → Import.
Repeat steps 3 to 5 for each group. The same popup has an All chats tab that exports the numbers of your one-to-one chats, including people you never saved.
Tips for a clean export
- Don't click or scroll in WhatsApp while members are being collected. The extension is scrolling the member list for you, and moving away can cut the list short.
- If your WhatsApp isn't in English, open the group info and click View all members yourself first, then press Scrape members.
- Hidden numbers stay hidden. Some members hide their phone number for privacy. They're listed with their name only, and no tool can export a number WhatsApp doesn't show you.
- Clean the list before you use it. Remove duplicates across groups and fix country codes with the free WhatsApp number list cleaner.
- Large groups take longer. The extension has to scroll through every member, so a group of several hundred takes more time than a small one. Leave the popup open.
Is the Mywa group scraper safe and private?
Everything runs in your browser. The extension reads the member list on your screen and builds the file on your computer. It doesn't send or store your group data anywhere, and you don't need a Mywa account to use it.
It also doesn't send messages, add or remove members, or change anything in your groups. It only reads what your own account can already see in Group info.
Is it allowed to export WhatsApp group numbers?
Two separate things matter here: collecting the list, and what you do with it.
Collecting the list. Exporting members isn't a WhatsApp feature, and the Mywa extension isn't made or endorsed by WhatsApp. WhatsApp's Terms of Service bar using the service through unauthorised automated means and collecting information about users in an unauthorised manner. Use the extension for groups you run or belong to, for your own records, and don't resell or publish the list.
Messaging the people on it. This is where numbers get banned. Being in the same group isn't consent to receive your messages.
- On personal WhatsApp or the WhatsApp Business app, bulk messaging and auto-messaging are against WhatsApp's terms, and members who get unwanted messages report and block you.
- On the WhatsApp Business API, the WhatsApp Business Messaging Policy only lets you message people who gave you their number and agreed to hear from your business, and you must honour every request to stop. Blocks and reports lower your quality rating, and Meta pauses low-quality templates.
- In India, the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 also expects consent before you use someone's personal data for a purpose like marketing.
What should you do with the numbers after exporting?
A safe way to turn a group into customers is to ask members to come to you:
- Post a link in the group. Make a click-to-chat link to your business number with the WhatsApp link generator and invite members to message you for the offer, price list or updates.
- Treat a message as the opt-in. Anyone who messages you has started a conversation, and on the API that opens a 24-hour customer service window where you can reply freely.
- Tag them in your contacts. Import the exported CSV into Mywa, then mark the members who opted in, so campaigns only go to them.
- Send approved templates to opted-in contacts. Outside the 24-hour window, the API only lets you start a conversation with a template Meta has approved. See how to send bulk WhatsApp messages without a ban.
Other ways to get WhatsApp group numbers
| Method | Effort | Gets numbers? | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mywa Chrome extension | About a minute per group | Yes, except hidden numbers, plus names and admins | Any group size, on a computer |
| Copy from Group info by hand | Slow: one member at a time | Yes, one by one | A handful of members |
| Export chat (WhatsApp app) | Medium: you pull numbers out of a text file | Only people who sent messages, if they aren't saved in your contacts | Small, active groups |
| Ask members to message you | Low, but you wait for replies | Only people who reply | Building an opted-in list |
Export chat is in the group's menu on the WhatsApp phone app. It gives you a text file of the conversation, where messages from people not in your contacts show their phone number. Members who never posted won't be in it.
Where Mywa fits
The extension is free and works on its own. Mywa itself is a WhatsApp Business API platform: a shared team inbox, template campaigns to opted-in contacts, no-code automation and click-to-WhatsApp ad lead replies on Meta's official platform. Import the CSV from the extension into Mywa contacts, tag who opted in, and message them from one inbox.
Mywa is ₹999 a month with every feature included, and Meta bills message charges directly to your own WhatsApp Business Account at its official rates, with zero markup. See Mywa pricing.
